NYPD Officers Shoot Man Armed with Butcher Knife During Attack on Children

 By Heraldviews

New York police shot and wounded a 49-year-old man Sunday morning after he allegedly attacked four children with a butcher knife inside a Brooklyn home. The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on 84th Street in the Bensonhurst neighborhood.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, officers responded to a 911 call from an 11-year-old girl who had locked herself in a bedroom while being attacked. The child was unable to provide her address, but police used phone tracking to locate the residence.

When officers arrived, they were let into the home by an unharmed child but heard screams coming from another room. Police forced their way inside and encountered Lun Chang Chen standing near the entrance holding a bloody butcher knife. Authorities say Chen ignored multiple commands to drop the weapon and instead moved toward the officers, prompting two policemen to fire a total of seven shots.

Four girls - ages 8, 11, 13 and 16 - sustained serious stab wounds in the attack and were transported to Maimonides Medical Center. All are expected to survive. A five-year-old boy who was also in the home escaped unharmed and ran to get help when the violence began.

Chen, who was shot by police, remains in critical condition at a local hospital. His exact relationship to the children is still being determined, though family members told local media he had struggled with mental health issues.

"This could have ended very differently," Commissioner Tisch said during a press briefing, commending the officers' swift response. New York State Senator Steven Chan, who represents the district, called the incident "devastating" for the community.

The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is reviewing the officers' use of firearms, while detectives continue working to determine a motive for the attack.

BBC News has reached out to the NYPD for additional information about the ongoing investigation.
