An international advocacy group has called on President Bola Tinubu to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy, warning that recent political developments in Rivers State risk undermining constitutional governance.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Movement for Democracy (NDMD) expressed deep concern over the six-month suspension of Rivers State’s elected governor, deputy governor, and state assembly members, describing the move as a "distortion of democratic principles."

In an open letter co-signed by its President, Dr. Samson Idoko, and Secretary General, Patriot John Andrew Onuh, the group urged President Tinubu to reconsider the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State. Instead, it recommended resolving the crisis through legislative measures, including stringent sanctions for those found culpable.

Key Concerns Raised

The NDMD warned that the current situation could tarnish President Tinubu’s democratic legacy, recalling his past pro-democracy activism.

"There is clear derailment from what Your Excellency stood and fought for," the letter stated. "A practice where elected officials are suspended for six months does not represent the democracy you championed."

The group likened Nigeria’s democracy to a patient "in a state of asphyxia, losing air," and cautioned that failure to act could lead to "a crude democratic tragedy."

Proposed Solutions

To restore stability, the NDMD suggested:

• Revoking the emergency declaration in Rivers State.
• Enforcing legislative measures with strong deterrents, including a 10-year ban from political office for violators.
• Ensuring due process to prevent further erosion of democratic norms.

Appeal to Tinubu’s Legacy

The letter concluded with an impassioned plea: "We are convinced that Your Excellency will heed this call and act expeditiously. Have the confidence of our unending patriotism, Sir."
