A traditional marriage ceremony in Mbaise, Imo State, took a dramatic turn after the bride’s family demanded a staggering ₦1 million as bride price, leading to chaos and an abrupt halt to the proceedings.
The groom had arrived with his
family to finalise the traditional rites, but the hefty demand sparked outrage
among his relatives. The situation quickly escalated as some youths from the
groom’s side erupted in protest, shouting, “Anyị achọghịzi ịnụ di ọzọ!”,
translated as “We Are Not Marrying Again!” in the Igbo language.
Bride price negotiations are a
customary part of Igbo traditional marriage rites, involving the presentation
of gifts and monetary payments to the bride’s family. However, the sum
requested in this case was deemed excessive, leading to a heated disagreement.
The incident has reignited
debate over the long-standing tradition of high bride prices in Mbaise. Critics
argue that such exorbitant demands discourage suitors and place an unnecessary
financial burden on grooms. Others, however, defend the practice, insisting
that a woman’s worth cannot be reduced to mere money.
This latest controversy adds to
the ongoing discussion about whether cultural traditions should evolve to
reflect modern realities or remain unchanged as a symbol of heritage and
respect.
The question remains, should
love come at such a high price?
