Court Upholds Igwe Okonkwo As Legitimate Ruler Of Alor Community

A High Court in Ogidi has affirmed Igwe Mac-Anthony Okonkwo as the rightful traditional ruler of the Alor Community in Anambra State.

Justice Chukwudi Nwankwo dismissed a legal challenge against Igwe Okonkwo’s legitimacy, describing it as "incompetent and lacking in merit."

This was the fourth lawsuit brought against the monarch by individuals, including Mr. Uzoma Igbonwa and Mr. Ifeanyi Obiazi, all of which have now been rejected by the courts.

Speaking after the ruling, an elated Igwe Okonkwo thanked God for the victory, saying it was a triumph for the entire Alor community.

He noted that the traditional throne of Alor is rotational and confirmed that he has now spent 11 years as monarch. He also praised his supporters for standing by him.

The ruler, also known as Ezedioramma III, commended his legal team, led by Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) and Dubem Anyaigbo (SAN), for their efforts in securing the judgment.

He revealed that the three previous causes against him were not heard, while the fourth was dismissed. Despite legal battles, he expressed faith in Nigeria’s judiciary, calling it "the hope of the common man."

Chief Chukwuemeka Ikegwuogu, a member of the Igwe’s cabinet, said the ruling proved that "there are still judges who stand for justice." He urged Alor residents to support the monarch, describing him as a peace-loving leader.

He recalled that Igwe Okonkwo won a contested election for the throne with most rivals accepting the outcome except a few who pursued legal action.

Another community member, Dr Dominic Chigozie, recounted the legal battles and advised the Igwe to continue serving the people.

The judgment was followed by 21 gun salutes at the palace and a community square as residents celebrated the monarch’s return.
