Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, are reportedly in discussions about forming a new political party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources reveal that the two
politicians recently met to explore the possibility of adopting a fresh
political platform. A follow-up meeting is slated for Saturday, November 30, in
Yola, Adamawa State, where Obi will deliver the keynote address at Atiku’s 78th
birthday celebration. The event, to be held at the American University of
Nigeria (AUN) owned by Atiku, is seen as a demonstration of their ongoing
camaraderie.
According to reports, a
spokesperson for the duo confirmed that a potential merger is under
consideration but declined to provide further details. Since their loss to
President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, both
Atiku and Obi have reportedly sought avenues for political collaboration amid
challenges within their respective parties.
The PDP remains embroiled in a
leadership crisis, with its national chairman, Umar Damagum, being closely
aligned with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who
opposed Atiku’s candidacy in 2023. Similarly, Obi's Labour Party has faced internal
discord, notably a strained relationship with the party’s chairman, Julius
Abure.
Former Kaduna State Governor
Nasir El-Rufai is also said to be involved in the discussions, fueling
speculation of a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
