The Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) Anambra East Local Government Youth Mayor, Rtn. Engr. Obiudu Child, has called on National Assembly members to enact laws and facilitate bills that will effectively promote youth development and sustain Nigeria's democracy.
Engr. Obiudu made this appeal
on Saturday when he led the Nsugbe Youth Assembly (NYA) on a condolence visit
to the Senator representing Anambra North, Sen. Tony Okechukwu Nwoye, during
his father's burial, the Late Chief Lawrence Nwoye Nwabisi, in his country home
in Offiantta Village, Nsugbe, Anambra East Local Government Area.
Speaking to newsmen after the
burial, Engr. Obiudu, who is also the President General of the Nsugbe Youth
Assembly (NYA), stated that the lifeline and survival of Nigerian democracy
depend on the kind of laws made by the legislature.
He emphasized that youths are ever ready to cooperate with and support legislators in promoting good governance in their various communities when they are engaged and empowered in meaningful and productive ventures.
"We want the lawmakers to
engage their constituents in constructive town hall meetings to sustain effective
representation and to sponsor quality bills that respond to the needs and
priorities of their people through performing high-quality oversight functions,
holding the executive accountable to deliver the dividends of democracy to the
people," he said.
He highlighted the importance
of encouraging and empowering Anambra North youths to pursue agricultural
activities, particularly aquaculture, to generate personal income and increase
internally generated revenue (IGR) for both the State and Federal Government,
noting the advantages of this initiative in effectively addressing youth restiveness
in the agrarian zone.
"Establishing a tertiary
institution specifically for fisheries and aquaculture in Anambra North and
creating stable farm settlements in all local governments will help to
meaningfully engage the youths and reduce their inclination toward crime and
criminality," he added.
Engr. Obiudu praised Senator
Tony Nwoye’s renowned commitment and resilience, particularly for his active
participation in significant developmental projects that enhance the well-being
of Anambra State residents and for his numerous empowerment programs within his
constituency.
The NYA President General sympathized with the Nwoye family and prayed that God would grant the late Chief Lawrence Nwoye Nwabisi eternal rest. Reflecting on the life of the late patriarch, he described him as a peaceful and kind man whose legacy of love and unity is both remarkable and worthy of emulation by his family and the entire Nsugbe community.
Engr. Obiudu further applauded
the Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, for the
ongoing developmental projects across the state’s 21 local government areas and
commended the Governor's exceptional commitment to youth development through
the "One Youth, Two Skills" empowerment program.
While appreciating the
President General of ASATU Youth, Comrade Ken Okoli, for mobilizing
representatives from the 179 communities for the visit, he urged the youths to
seize the opportunity to ensure sustainable personal development while
continuing to support the State Government’s efforts.
