The Chairman of the Publicity Committee for the Local Government Service Week Programme, Comrade Nnamdi Nweke, has debunked reports that Barr. Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), diverted part of the money donated by Governor Chukwuma Soludo for workers.
Comrade Nweke highlighted that
the LGSC is surprised at such media outbursts orchestrated by opposition
elements in the state because the Chairman of the Local Government Service
Commission has yet to receive a report from the organizing committee
responsible for planning and executing the Local Government Service Week, “Even
at the time of writing this report, the organizing committee is still busy with
programs, and the subcommittee on finance, which handled the funds, has yet to
report back to the Chairman," Nweke said.
Speaking to newsmen after a
thanksgiving mass on Sunday held at St. Patrick's Cathedral Awka, Comrade
Nweke, who is also the Head of the Department of Education and Social
Development for Anambra West Local Government, said the report is false and
malicious.
In his words: "We thank
the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for supporting the
workers present at the opening ceremony with a transportation allowance of
twenty thousand naira each. This proves that Soludo is a workers-friendly
governor. He said it and implemented it. The money was brought through the
Commissioner for Local Government and was prudently distributed to the officers
concerned.
"The Anambra State LGSC wishes
to set the record straight and to convey to ndi Anambra and the general public
that the allegations are false and devoid of any truth. It's simply the work of
mischief-makers and enemies of the Anambra State Government, bent on creating
unnecessary tension in the state and aimed at tarnishing the monumental
achievements in LG reforms and zero tolerance for corruption initiated by the
award-winning commission chairman, Barr. Vin Ezeaka," he said.
He added: "For clarity's
sake, Barr. Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka never disbursed any money but ordered that the
attendees' transport fares be shared among all the LG workers as directed by
Mr. Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo. This was carried out immediately.
All the attendees present at the hall collected their ₦20,000 allowance
together with their lunch package, which was shared LG by LG.
"The Commission also wants
to inform the general public that the Solution Vanguard drawn from the 21 LGAs
were not among the 30 participants per LG. The ushers, Strike Force, drivers,
Solution Magazine members, various committee members, and others drawn from the
21 LGAs engaged in one service or another were part of the money but not included
in the 30 names per LG.
"Moreover, we noticed that
some LG staff started calling their friends and relations when they noticed
that the money was provided physically at the hall. Their names were not
included in the list submitted earlier, and they were the ones shouting and
creating unnecessary tension when they realized they were not part of the
money.
"ANSLGSC found it absurd
and surprising that some uninformed, disgruntled elements and agents of
destabilization would publish such baseless allegations and lies against Barr.
Vin Ezeaka, whose pedigree as an incorruptible personality and impeccable
record of zero tolerance for corruption are emulative.
"The rumour is false
information. This publication is a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation
of Barr. Ezeaka, who planned the successful program intended to positively
transform the local government system.
“This reporter intentionally
wanted to undermine the program and damage the reputation of a man who has done
what other Commission chairmen were not able to do since the creation of the
Anambra State Local Service Commission.
"The program was very
successful, and I commend Governor Chukwuma Soludo for approving the local
government system to carry out this program and for personally attending on
Tuesday, 25th 2004, at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka,
to declare it open.
"Mr. Governor was very
happy with the turnout and was impressed with the quality of the paper presentations
and the keynote speaker.
"I thank Mr. Governor for
giving the local government the opportunity to organize the program, and I am
also grateful to Barr. Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka, Chairman of the Local Government
Service Commission, who liaised with the board to get approval from Mr.
Governor to run the five-day program with quality paper presentations from
reputable professors in Anambra State and beyond.
“There were delegations from
the 21 local governments and invited guests. This is the first of its kind
since the creation of the local government system in Anambra State.
“The expectations from local
government workers are that henceforth, they will be ICT compliant. They are
expected to put into practice all they were taught during the paper
presentations, especially on the need for immediate transformation from analog
to digital service because everything centered on ICT.
"We want a situation where
the Chairman of the Anambra Service Commission can call an officer from the
field to report on the day's activities without the need for transportation,
thereby reducing costs and risks.
"We have learned many
lessons from the program that will help us be more efficient in our delivery
and services at the grassroots and ensure that all we are doing aligns with
Governor Chukwuma Soludo's policy and transformation agenda.
“We are ready to go back to
work because we have been equipped both practically and theoretically by the
resource persons. It is now time for us to step it down to the grassroots, and
the government has promised to assist us by providing the necessary amenities,"
Nweke said.
