FG Spent N473 Million on Remi Tinubu’s Trips to Three Countries

Federal Government spent ₦473 million to sponsor President Bola Tinubu's wife Oluremi Tinubu’s trips to three countries: the United Kingdom, Mozambique, and Ethiopia, according to data from the public payments portal Govspend.ng.

The government spent ₦126.295 million for the Remi’s trip to London, UK. In March 2024, this amount was equivalent to $83,967, with an exchange rate of ₦1,504 per dollar.

For her trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 9, 2024, the government spent ₦144.571 million. The dollar equivalent was $96,118.

Additionally, ₦202.386 million was spent for Remi’s trip to Mozambique in March 2024, which was equivalent to $126,834.

All these expenditures were recorded on the same day, March 15, 2024, on the Govspend website.

These expenditures come amid growing concerns about the need to manage the country’s scarce resources more effectively.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly expressed concerns over inadequate revenue.

Organized labour groups have recently demanded an increase in the minimum wage, a move that has sparked disagreements, with the government citing a lack of funds as the reason for its inability to comply.

Recently, a report emphasized the government’s neglect in releasing budget performance reports during the Tinubu administration.

This violation of the law deprives citizens of access to information on government spending and its allocation on a quarterly basis.

Additionally, the government plans to borrow ₦6.6 trillion to address budget shortfalls, underscoring the urgent need for prudent budget management.
