In a violent response to a prophecy, youths in Agharoza village, part of the Iboko community in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, demolished and set ablaze their kinsman’s houses on Thursday. The youths also burned other valuable property and destroyed the victim's yam barn and farms.
The
incident followed a prophecy by Prophet Ubadimma, who claimed the man was
responsible for the community's misfortunes. Ubadimma, a popular prophet known
for traveling from village to village to "fish out evil men," was
invited to the village for a three-day prayer event.
According
to Nwota Gabriel, an indigene of the area, Ubadimma pointed to the victim
during the event, accusing him of being one of the evildoers causing
backwardness in the village. Despite the man's protests of innocence, the
villagers insisted on punishing him according to Ubadimma's prophecy.
On the
fourth day of the programme, the accused man called the police to disrupt the
proceedings. In retaliation, angry youths demolished his houses, motorcycle,
farm, and other property, believing he was responsible for the village's woes.
In
response to the incident, the traditional ruler of Ndieze Autonomous Community,
HRH Eze Hyacinth Nwokpor, has banned prophets and prophetesses from operating
in his community. Nwokpor cited multiple issues caused by prophets, including a
recent case where a man killed his father after being told by a prophet that
his father was responsible for his impotence.
