The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State claimed Tuesday that former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has seen a significant decline in his political support, losing over 70% of his followership.
Eric
Nwibani, Secretary of the State APC Caretaker Committee, made the assertion
during a news briefing in Port Harcourt. He noted that despite Amaechi's stature
as a former Governor and "super minister," he has suffered electoral
setbacks from 2015 to 2023. Nwibani's comments were in response to Amaechi's
recent statement blaming defections to Minister of the Federal Capital
Territory Nyesom Wike on hunger among his former allies.
"Amaechi
has lost over 70% of his followership," Nwibani said. "I’m done
working with Amaechi. Let me tell you the type of leader Amaechi is."
He
criticized Amaechi for promises made and not kept, citing an incident during
the 2019 presidential campaign where deaths occurred at a rally. "Three
persons from Obio/Akpo and other LGAs of the State, Amaechi visited three
families in Obio/Akpo and promised the families through their leaders that he
would do something for the deceased families. But he didn’t turn up. That is the
kind of a leader Amaechi is."
Nwibani
continued, "He (Amaechi) carries bitterness over the years. I heard him
say he was going to plan to win the next election."
Nwibani
also disputed Amaechi's characterization of his political rivals as hungry,
stating, "Amaechi cannot say those working with Wike are hungry. I don’t
know where he worked before joining politics. We know he made money from
government and politics."
Meanwhile,
Chibuike Ikenga, Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress,
commented on a recent court ruling affirming the status of 27 Pro-Wike
lawmakers within the party. "Well, the decision of the Court is what it
is. Ours is to obey or appeal," Ikenga said. "But as we speak, our
leadership is looking at it, and based on the advice from the legal department
of our party, we will take a position on it."
