In a tragic incident at Taabaa Police Station, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, a group of youths attacked and fatally assaulted Police Inspector Mrs. Christiana Erekere while she was on duty, prompting outrage and calls for justice.
The incident, which occurred on
Thursday, April 25, 2024, unfolded when a convoy of over 30 youths, traveling
to a wedding in Akwa Ibom State, was halted for a routine check in front of the
police station. Trouble erupted when a police team questioned the validity of
documents related to one of the vehicles in the convoy.
According to an anonymous
source familiar with the situation, the altercation escalated when the youths
became agitated and demanded the return of their documents. Despite complying
with the request, tensions rose further when the youths accused Inspector
Erekere of filming them and attempted to seize her phone.
The situation turned violent as
the youths began assaulting Inspector Erekere, pelting her with stones and
beating her with sticks until she lost consciousness. Despite efforts to revive
her at a nearby hospital, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The family of the deceased is
demanding justice, emphasizing that Inspector Erekere was serving her nation
and did not deserve such a fate. Mrs. Nule Felix, the victim's elder sister,
lamented the merciless nature of the attack, highlighting Inspector Erekere's
role as a widow and mother of four.
In response to the incident, the Rivers State Police Command has arrested 16 individuals allegedly involved in the assault, with investigations ongoing. Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has personally visited the victim's family to offer condolences and assure them that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
The Rivers State Police Command
has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, vowing to
hold all responsible parties accountable for their actions. The command extends
its deepest sympathies to the family of Inspector Erekere during this
challenging time.
