The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the South East Geopolitical Zone, will take a legal action against the state governors in the zone.
The National Vice Chairman of
the party, South East, Chilos Godsent, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in
Awka, Anambra State, shortly after the party's South East zonal leadership
retreat held in the state, on Wednesday, 17th April, 2024.
According to the ADC leader,
who unequivocally linked the lingering insecurity situation in the South East
to non-conduct of local government elections in the zone, the party urged the
South East state governors to urgently conduct local government elections in
their states.
His words, 'we're urging all
the state governors in the South East to immediately conduct local government
election in their various states.
'This is because the absence of
local government system exaggerates and promotes insecurity, hunger and
hardship in the land.
'The majority of the youth that
engage in various crimes today is as a result of unemployment, lack of
protection of their welfare, among others.
'But if local government system
works, it's these same youths that are going to be councilors, supervisory
councilors, chairmen of the local government areas, and SSAs, special advisers
to the local government chairmen and councilors.
'Also, it's these same youths
that are going to be contractors.
'If the local government system works, it's going to provide a whole lot of employment, enhance youth leadership capacity, and to a great extent, mitigate as well as reduce the tendency of conflict and insecurity in the South East zone,' Godsent hinted.
He continued, 'by the section 7
of the 1999 Constitution, the local government system supposes to be (managed)
by democratically elected people.
'But what we see in the South
East is a situation where the governors appoint caretaker committee, and
convert the local government system into a conduit to loot, mismanage, and
misappropriate the local government funds which is unacceptable,' Godsent said.
'There is no way one person can
be the governor, commissioner, local government chairman, and councilor.
'And you can see that the house
of state assembly has been pocketed by the same state governor. These are
unacceptable.
'What we want to do now is to
take a legal action against all these state governments to compel the judiciary
to pronounce that the issue of caretaker committee for the local government
system is illegal, and cannot continue to be acceptable.
'These are what ADC is asking
for,' the party leader hinted.
Also, the National Deputy
Chairman of the party, Hon Kenneth Chibuogu Gbande, and Anambra State Chairman
of the party, Comrade Patrick Obianyor, who spoke to the press, said the
retreat was to chart a way for the party to take over the governance of the
entire South East Geopolitical Zone.
The ADC leaders, in their
separate remarks, expressed hope for political victory for the party, starting
from the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, considering the
enthusiasm of its stakeholders that participated in the retreat.
'ADC is a party of youths,
women, and the disabled; we're only party in Nigeria that has 7 geopolitical
zones.
'If you look at the enthusiasm
of all those that attended this retreat, particularly those from Anambra, it's
actually very clear that we're ready to go.
'So, we're really
restrategizing to take over Anambra in the next coming election, bearing in
mind that most of the parties now have their own peculiar problems.
'As of now, it's ADC that
remains the only part that's well packaged and has no internal crisis; so, as
it were, we're very optimistic that we'll take over Anambra State' they said.
