David Adeleke, the Nigerian artist known as Davido, has shared the reasons behind his father, Adedeji Adeleke, using his influence to cancel numerous shows during the early stages of his music career.
During an interview on the
'Kelly Clarkson Show,' Davido disclosed the details to host Kelly Clarkson, explaining
that his father's actions were a result of his increasing prominence in the
Nigerian music scene.
In the interview, published on
Saturday, Davido elaborated, "I come from a family that greatly values
education, and I am the first entertainer in my entire bloodline. My father was
insistent on me completing my education. This insistence stemmed from two
factors. Firstly, because I hadn't achieved success in music at the time.
Secondly, due to his belief in the importance of education. He didn't oppose my
music pursuits but was steadfast in his desire for me to complete my
education."
He continued, "My father is the proprietor of a university, so you can understand the context. Additionally, my mother was a college professor. I think their concerns were rooted in the desire for our children to excel. Success in the entertainment industry is not easily attained, and they wanted the best for me."
Davido then revealed, "We
reached an agreement whereby I would attend school for two weeks each month,
and for the remaining two weeks, I could devote my time to being in the studio
and pursuing my music career. However, as my music gained more popularity, I
began to disrupt the classroom environment. Consequently, I transitioned into a
part-time class schedule. My growing music career was causing too many
distractions, and this led to my father's frustration."
He recounted an incident,
saying, "I recall an instance when he observed a billboard advertising one
of my shows, and the show was canceled even before I arrived. He possessed that
level of influence. Consequently, a point was reached where people hesitated to
book me due to such concerns. Ultimately, I did complete my education, and now
he stands as my most devoted supporter."
