Punch Report, November 24, 2023:
"Yola Outrage: Military's Impunity Has Become Insufferable."
From the military regime to
civilian administrations, the Nigerian army has consistently behaved as if it
is exempt from adhering to Nigerian laws. At the slightest provocation, they
unleash a volley of bullets on civilian groups and even their fellow law
enforcers, the police.
What disturbs the Nigerian
populace is the lukewarm response from the presidents, who seem to ignore these
tragic incidents as if they are fearful of the army, despite being, according
to the constitution, the "head of state and commander in chief of the
armed forces."
The Punch newspaper is
essential reading for all Nigerians, as it has delved into the archives to
chronicle the senseless slaughter of civilian groups and police by the powerful
Nigerian army, without holding them accountable, as is the practice in
civilized countries.
President Tinubu must take a
different approach if his assumption of power is intended to address the
ongoing atrocities committed by the army, navy, police, and DSS. The blatant
impunity of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria has gone on for far too long in
this seemingly directionless and, some might say, "god-forsaken"
nation.
This madness and brazen
misconduct by the military must be brought to an end. The Yola incident should
serve as an example, demonstrating that the perpetrators of such heinous acts
will face the consequences of their actions according to the laws of the land.
Nigeria's law enforcement agencies cannot continue to behave as if the country
is a primitive enclave without facing the repercussions of blatant violations
of the nation's laws.
