Police authorities in Anambra State are refuting recent claims made by a kidnap victim, who asserted that Umunze community in the Orumba South Local Government Area is the headquarters of kidnappers.
The victim, held for four days
and released after a ransom payment, recounted that even when his vehicle was
traced to Umunze, police operatives informed his relatives that the area was a
'no-go area' and the kidnappers' headquarters.
The Anambra State Police
Command has categorically rejected these allegations, stating that their
divisional station in Umunze is fully operational. According to a press release
by spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police denounce the claims as false
and baseless, emphasizing the ongoing efforts that recently led to the
dismantling of a kidnap gang in the area.
Ikenga expressed sympathy for
the kidnap victim, asserting that the Divisional Police Headquarters in Umunze
is functioning at full capacity, and the police continue to fulfill their responsibilities
to the community.
Commissioner of Police, CP
Aderemi Adeoye, echoed this sentiment, assuring the public that their safety
remains the Police Command's top priority. He highlighted recent successes,
including the dismantling of insurgent camps near Umunze, rescuing kidnapped
victims, recovering stolen vehicles, and making arrests.
Adeoye also addressed the
contradiction in claims, stating, "How can anyone claim the Police
described Umunze as a no-go area?" The release concluded by acknowledging
police awareness of insurgent activities south of Umunze in a neighboring
state, with ongoing collaborative efforts to eliminate the threat.
