International Observer Group Reports Irregularities in Imo Gubernatorial Polls

The Pan African Women Projects (PAWP), an international election monitoring group, has asserted that the results of the Imo gubernatorial polls were tainted with irregularities, as evidenced by the IREV portal.

Dr. Eno Udensi, PAWP Head of Mission, disclosed this information during the post-election briefing in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Dr. Udensi highlighted irregularities in the tallied results displayed on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) IREV portal, emphasizing that results were uploaded for polling units where elections did not take place. She noted the discrepancies, stating, "At this election, we observed in the tallied results as shown in the portal. Also, there were polling units that observed that elections were not held. When these reports came to our situation room, we asked our observers to get footage of these units for our reports."

She expressed concern that the elections in Imo State deviated from the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. However, she expressed hope that the electoral commission would pay attention to these irregularities and consider the group's recommendations and suggestions for future elections' credibility.

PAWP urged INEC to enhance logistics by utilizing drones to deploy key materials to Registration Area Centres (RAC) and allowing presiding officers and assistants to proceed directly to their respective centers in advance for timely accreditation.

The group further advised INEC to involve experienced NGO workers, civil society organizations, top civil servants, and private sector workers with proven integrity instead of the young ad-hoc staff deployed for the election, emphasizing their overburdened capacity.

PAWP called on the Inspector General of Police to organize a stakeholders meeting involving representatives of political parties, INEC, observers, and the media to address security lapses during the election and make corrections for subsequent polls.

Acknowledging incidents of violence, intimidation, and ballot box snatching in various local government areas, PAWP expressed gratitude to INEC for the opportunity to serve as a foreign observer group. They also commended the media for unbiased reporting and extended their appreciation to all observation groups deployed for the election.
