Manchester United's David de Gea 'refusing to take £9m-a-year pay cut'

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is said to be rejecting the club's attempts to cut his salary by up to £9 million per year in any new deal, according to reports.

The 32-year-old's contract at Old Trafford is coming to an end, and he could potentially leave as a free agent this summer.

De Gea has been linked with a return to Spain for a while now, especially after briefly losing his spot in the team to Dean Henderson. However, he has since regained his form and has been instrumental in Manchester United's pursuit of a treble this season.

Despite his performances, Manchester United are reportedly unwilling to continue paying De Gea his current salary of £375,000 per week, as he will turn 33 in November. The club has proposed reducing his weekly wage to £200,000, which would result in a £9 million decrease in his annual earnings.

However, De Gea is said to have no intention of accepting such terms, as it would see him fall behind other high earners like Casemiro and Raphael Varane in the club's wage structure. While De Gea's camp acknowledges that he may need to take a pay cut due to the club's cost-cutting measures, they do not want him to drop too far down the earnings hierarchy.

Despite the initial disagreement, all parties remain optimistic about reaching a compromise in the coming weeks. One possible solution could be to offset the reduced base pay with significant bonuses. Manchester United recently activated contract extensions for several players, and there is a similar option in De Gea's deal to keep him at the club until 2024.

De Gea has been with Manchester United for 12 seasons since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011. He holds the club record for the most clean sheets with 185 in 533 appearances, and he recently broke Peter Schmeichel's shut-out record in the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United.

He has won eight trophies with the club and has been in impressive form this season, leading the Premier League with 13 clean sheets alongside Nick Pope. He could surpass Pope with a 14th clean sheet in the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
