Erling Braut Haaland Equals Premier League Records as Manchester City Defeat Leicester City 3-1.
Manchester City closed in on Premier League
leaders Arsenal with a 3-1 victory over Leicester City, thanks to a stellar
performance by Erling Braut Haaland. The Norwegian international scored two
goals, taking his season tally to 32 - equaling the record for the most goals
in a 38-game Premier League season, previously held by Mohamed Salah.
The game started with a bang as John Stones
scored a stunning half-volley from the edge of the box in the fifth minute after a Riyad Mahrez corner was cleared by Wout Faes. City continued to
dominate and soon earned a penalty when Wilfred Ndidi handled the ball in the
box. Haaland stepped up and slotted it home to make it 2-0 in the 13th minute.
Haaland wasn't done yet, as he capitalized on
a misplaced pass by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to score his second goal of the day
in the 25th minute, assisted by Kevin De Bruyne. With this goal, Haaland
matched Salah's record of 32 goals in a Premier League season.
Leicester City tried to make a comeback in
the second half and pulled one back in the 75th minute, with Kelechi Iheanacho
finding the back of the net after Harry Souttar's header was parried by City's
goalkeeper Ederson. Iheanacho had another chance to score in added time but hit
the post.
Despite Leicester's late surge, City held on
to secure the victory, although they had some nervy moments, including a
defensive error by Ruben Dias that gave James Maddison a clear run at goal.
Ederson made a crucial save with his leg to deny Maddison, ensuring City's win.
With this victory, City closed the gap to
Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table to just three points, keeping
their title hopes alive. Meanwhile, Leicester remains in 19th place, two points
from safety with seven games remaining.
City's next challenge will be the second leg
of their Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on Wednesday,
while Leicester's next game is at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers on April
22.
