Frank Lampard's return to the dugout at Stamford Bridge ended in disappointment once again as Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to a resilient Brighton side on Saturday afternoon.
Lampard, who
has yet to secure a win since his return as manager, has seen his team struggle
in their last three games, losing to Wolves, Real Madrid, and now Brighton.
Despite a bright start for Chelsea, with
Conor Gallagher finding the net within the first 15 minutes, it quickly went
downhill from there. Outplayed by a well-organized Brighton side led by manager
Roberto De Zerbi, the Blues conceded an equalizer before half-time through
Danny Welbeck.
Brighton dominated the game, with a whopping
26 shots on goal compared to Chelsea's eight, and enjoying almost 60 percent of
possession. The winner for Brighton came in the 69th-minute courtesy of Julio
Enciso, leaving Chelsea with another disappointing result to contend with.
With a crucial second leg against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League looming, where they need to overturn a 2-0 deficit, Chelsea finds themselves languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, currently sitting in 11th place.
Lampard will undoubtedly be
hoping to avoid further humiliation when Real Madrid visits Stamford Bridge in
midweek. It has been a challenging season for Chelsea so far, and Lampard's
return has yet to yield the desired results for the club and its fans.
